Pulling history from the sea

One day in March of this year, Steve Lloyd’s 27-foot cabin cruiser Obtainium was headed on a course along the Kenai Peninsula’s southwestern tip from Seldovia to the elongated bay of Port Graham, which shelters the town of the same name.

On July 18, 1868, the Torrent was grounded on a rock outcropping near Coal Cove. The ship was 141 feet long and carried about 150 people on a mission to establish a U.S. Army fort on the Kenai Peninsula. The Torrent and her crew of about 15 sailors were civilians, chartered from the Pope and Talbot Company, a logging company with roots in Maine and vessels working in the Pacific Northwest. The ship was under the command of Captain Richard Carleton. Steam power was relatively new, and the Torrent still relied three masts of sails and the skills of its crew. A ballast of cargo and bricks kept the ship from blowing over, and Lloyd would eventually find dozen of bricks in the main debris field at the reef near Coal Cove.
