Diving Colombia's Pacific coast

The Colombian Pacific Coast is renowned for the dark sand of its beaches and extreme tides. The water is not as warm as in the Caribbean, but animal species are more abundant.

In the Pacific Ocean, species are larger
Colombia is often in the news for all the wrong reasons. Often forgotten, the country offers a great variety of activeties including some spectacular scuba diving.

Nuqui
Nuqui is a small village embedded in a tropical jungle where clear waters and the Pacific Ocean make it a paradisial destination. The sea here has a rocky bottom. The marine fauna is large, and huge schools of fish may be observed frequently. The best season coincides with the arrival of the agallada sardine between April and June, An additional attraction is to accompany the locals to fish from their canoes in the midst of the sea and to sell their catch.

Malpelo Fauna and Flora Sanctuary
The island of Malpelo is a peak of a volcanic underwater mountain range whose walls plunge to depths of up to four thousand meters along the Colombian Pacific Coast. UNESCO declared the Sanctuary of Malpelo a World Natural Heritage Site in 2006 because of its impressive biophysical and natural attributes. Malpelo's characteristics have long attracted the attention of photographers and documentary filmmakers. Knowledgeable divers consider it one of the best diving spots in the world. Groups of yellow, silky, and Galapagos shark may be seen frequently. Malpelo is also one of the few places in the world where the deep-water odontaspis ferox shark may be observed regularly. Whale sharks, devil manta rays, marine mammals and schools of pelagic fish also make frequent appearances.

Gorgona
A national natural park composed of islands and islets where divers submerge into a seemingly endless space. During the day, they contrast sharply with the coral, the sand, and the rocks sculpted by currents. They can enter the caves where dolphins hide. At night, they blend into a marine ballet staged by turtles and the hundreds of species that guard the islands.

Bahia Solano, El Valle and the Cove of Utria
The Gulf of Cupica is located on the northernmost tip of the Colombian Pacific Coast. This was probably the place of entry for the first settlers of the South American continent. The Baudo mountain range runs parallel to the coast. It is a chain of mountains that extends its arms into the sea in numerous places and turns into a series of immense rocky reefs with branches and isolated patches of coral. Diving sites have been registered for divers of all levels. The most novel attraction is the sunken ship Sebastian de Belalcazar, now a mansion of huge grouper and snapper fish.
