The population of leatherback turtles in the eastern Pacific Ocean has plummeted by over 90 percent in the last 20 years. Researchers hope by satelitte tagging this ocean faring creatures, will give some insight which can help the species survive.

The hawksbill turtle is a critically endangered sea turtle belonging to the family Cheloniidae. The species has a worldwide distribution, with Atlantic and Pacific subspecies.

According to the Thai Marine and Coastal Resources Development and Research Center, statistics showed the number of sea turtles coming to Thailand’s Andaman shores to lay their eggs has dropped dramatically. There were only 10-20 nests per year, decreasing from up to 1,000 nests in the past.
