Nikon has followed the recent announcement of it's new flagship camera the D4, with the release of its second new full-frame dSLR in 2012. The announcement caps a remarkable turnaround for Nikon and signals it has overcome the impact of the natural disasters of the tsunami in Japan and the flooding in Thailand that effectively stopped its production.

The D800 is an FX-format, full-frame camera with a 36MP sensor that takes 7360 x 4912 resolution images and also features 1080p video with manual exposure controls that records at 30, 25, and 24 fps and the ability to feed uncompressed video to a monitor or recording device via HDMI as it's being captured.

The D800E has the same sensor as the D800, but with the industry standard Anti-Aliasing, integrated low-pass filter removed. The AA filter is used to reduce the moire effect in some images, which should make the E version popular with landscape photographers who appreciate the extra detail the filter removal will provide.

The Nikon D800 is priced at $2995 for the body only and the D800E version at $3300 for the body only.

Key features of the Nikon D800 are as follows:

- 36.3MP CMOS sensor.
- 15.3MP DX-format capture model.
- 51-point AF system with 15 cross-type sensors, rated to -2EV.
- ISO 100-6400 extendable to ISO 50-25,600 equiv.
- 1080p video at 30, 25 or 24 frames per second, up to 24Mbps
- 3.2", 921,000 dot LCD with anti-fog layer.
- Maximum 4fps continuous shooting in FX mode, 6fps in DX mode.
- Advanced Scene Recognition System with 91,000 pixel metering sensor.
- "Expeed 3" Image Processing.
- Dual-axis Virtual Horizon (on LCD screen/viewfinder).
