What makes this wreck site interesting is that no one has any idea of this Ships Name*, origin or the circumstances surrounding its sinking. A small group of local divers are volunteering their time and money in an attempt to answer these question in order to shed light on this lost and forgotten piece of Florida history.
Fahringer has brought up a few artifacts that he hopes to donate to the Marco Island Historical Society.
- We have an electric winch from the wreckage, some steam fittings and, of all things, a toilet from the ship–a 100-year-old toilet, he said in an interview with www.marconews.com
It appears to have been approximately 150 foot long and it had a beam of, about, 30 feet. It lies in about 80 feet of water and appears to have sunk mostly intact. Although the wreck has deterioration significantly, the paddle wheel spools, their cantilever beams supports and the boilers are this sites most defining attributes.
