Lionfish Reported at Flower Garden Banks

Lionfish, a venomous invasive marine species considered one of the top predators in many coral reef environments in the Atlantic, have been documented at NOAA's Flower Garden Banks National Marine Sanctuary - the first instance of the invader in the sanctuary since the species spread to U.S. East Coast waters in 2000.
Over 1000 freezing sea turtles rescued in Texas

Freezing temperatures caused approximately 1600 endangered green sea turtles to wash ashore on and around South Padre Island, Texas. The cold-blooded marine reptiles suffered from a condition called ‘cold-stunning’ which resembles a comatose state in response to the sudden drop in temperature.

Luouisinanas Governor Bobby Jindal announced that Independence Island – formerly an emergent island in Barataria Bay near Grand Isle – will be one of the first beneficiaries of the Building Conservation Program. Independence Island was formerly one of Louisiana’s popular fishing destinations, but due to coastal erosion and subsidence, the Island has sunk to the point that it is no longer a viable fisheries habitat.
Baby loggerhead sea turtles found on Anna Maria Island

Volunteers with Anna Maria Island Turtle Watch on Saturday morning excavated a loggerhead sea turtle nest, looking to count how many eggs hatched earlier this week and to rescue any baby sea turtles still buried in the sand.
