Nauticam announces NA-5DMKIII housing

Nauticam has announced the imminent release of its housing for the new Canon 5D MkIII SLR. The NA-5DMKIII features a double paddle lever for the right thumb that activates AF-On and Record. The housing uses "piano key" controls for the Set and Quick Control functions, and a multi controller pad for the camera's joystick. Lastly, ISO, Live View/Movie and Focus point selector controls are all available from the right hand handle. Initially, the housing will be supplied with a Nikonos sync port, although other bulkheads are available. Nauticam are hinting that they will be providing a fiber optic solution for the housing and camera in the future, and have added fiber optic ports for this.

The housing will be available from 1 June and will retail at $3600.

DAN announces winners of Ocean Views 2012

Wed, 16/05/2012 - 16:32

DAN has announced the winners of the 2012 Ocean Views competition on their Alert Diver online site. Deano Cook took first place with his split level image of a lemon shark in the Bahamas. He says of the image:

"As the sun was setting, I wanted to capture a quiet moment with one of the lemon sharks we had been photographing that afternoon. This particular shark was just as curious as I was, and what an amazing moment I was able to capture! His eye above the surface stares back at me, as if to show me he's watching, too. Below the surface his mouth was just slightly open, showing off his sharp teeth."

There is a full slide show of all the winning images, as well as a "bonus gallery" of other images from the contest. Hearty congratulations to all the photographers in the results, and especially to the many Wetpixel members featured.

Backscatter announces filter solution for GoPro

Wed, 16/05/2012 - 16:07

GoPro has recently announced the release of an underwater housing with a flat lens for its HERO POV cams. One of the issues that has been identified with this is that it is unable to take filters for color correction. Backscatter has announced that they have a product due for imminent release that will address this. The Flip-Up Color Correction Filter can be user installed and does not vignette in any camera lens angle mode. In changeable light conditions, the filter can be raised to allow more ambient light, and lowered to get the color correction.

It is due to ship in late June and the price is still to be confirmed.

Paul Watson arrested

Wed, 16/05/2012 - 07:22

Paul Watson, founder of the environmental organization Sea Shepherd, was arrested at Frankfurt Airport, Germany on 12 May, pending extradition to Costa Rica. This was carried out due to a warrant that had been issued in Costa Rica relating to events in Guatemalan waters in 2002 when Watson's boat, the Farley Mowat, encountered an illegal shark-finning operation run by a Costa Rican ship, the Varadero. Crew on the Varadero accused Watson of attempting to ram their boat and Watson was charged by Costa Rican authorities with attempted murder. The events were captured on video, and subsequently formed a part of the film Sharkwater.

This video evidence led to the charges being dropped, however it would seem that they have been re-investigated by a newly appointed prosecutor, and this has led to the arrest. Support for the campaigner has flooding in, and an online petition has been set up to call for his release. UPDATE. It looks like Germany will extradite Paul Watson to Costa Rica. Sea Shepherd are calling for people to contact the German authorities and ask them not to do so.

Illinois bans shark fin

Wed, 16/05/2012 - 07:12

stltoday.com reports that Bill HB4119 was passed today by the Illinois state legislature. This will make the possession or distribution of shark fins illegal in the state. State Sen. Antonio Munoz said the bill's purpose is to prevent shark finning, which is the removal of the shark's fin followed by releasing the shark back into the water. Although shark finning is illegal in U.S. waters, the possession of shark fins is only prohibited in several coastal states. The bill passed both the House and Senate by a large margin and will be sent to the governor’s desk for ratification.

Color grading report from NAB

Tue, 15/05/2012 - 17:22

Dennis Kutchera has presented a review of the color grading options that were available at NAB this year in the Creative Cow magazine. He looks at Dream Systems, DaVinci Resolve, Smoke for Mac, Avid (DS and Symphony), Assimilate Scratch and Adobe Speedgrade. He notes in his conclusion:

"It is a far bigger challenge to fake your way through complex color grading than it is to pose as an editor. This is not just art, it is also science, so you need a deep understanding of video processing and calibration. You also need a very high-end monitor and external scopes in a room that is color neutral. And of course you need the magic eyes for color grading."

GoPro underwater housing round-up

Tue, 15/05/2012 - 04:54

GoPro has announced the release of their own-branded underwater housing today. The GoPro HERO range of POV cams has revolutionized many areas of filmmaking, but their potential to do so underwater has been somewhat limited by the lack of housings with flat ports that allowed the camera to focus. Wetpixel Publisher, Eric Cheng, presents a round-up of available options for using a GoPro underwater.

Study released into manta movements

Sun, 13/05/2012 - 17:33

A paper has been published in the Public Library of Science ONE (PLoS ONE) journal detailing the movements of Giant manta rays (Manta birostris). The research team from the Wildlife Conservation Society, the University of Exeter (UK), and the Government of Mexico attached satellite transmitters to manta rays off the coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula over a 13-day period. The tracking devices were attached to the backs of six individuals —four females, one male, and one juvenile. The results show that:

"The satellite tag data revealed that some of the rays traveled more than 1,100 kilometers during the study period," said Dr. Matthew Witt of the University of Exeter. "The rays spent most of their time traversing coastal areas plentiful in zooplankton and fish eggs from spawning events."

Wetpixel D800 in-depth camera review has started

Sun, 13/05/2012 - 17:04

As promised, Wetpixel's in-depth review of the new Nikon D800 has started. We took delivery of a housing last Thursday, and have have dived it Friday and Saturday. As was somewhat to be expected, the D800 seems to have an amazing tonal range, and the recovery of detail in any shadows seems amazing. The testing will be going on over the next few weeks, with a full report hopefully here on the front page by the end of May.

In the meantime, images taken during the testing process are being published in the forum, please feel free to add you comments, and also any suggestions you might have for specific points for review.

Study shows grouper populations in serious decline

Fri, 11/05/2012 - 04:06

Wetpixel Senior Moderator Luiz Rocha has co- authored a paper published in the journal Fish and Fisheries. The paper reports on a study carried out as a part of the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN) Species Survival Commission, and involved a team of scientists spending the past ten years assessing the status of 163 grouper species worldwide. They report that 20 species (12%) are at risk of extinction if current overfishing trends continue, and an additional 22 species (13%) are Near Threatened. The team estimated that at least 90,000,000 groupers were captured in 2009. This represents more than 275,000 metric tones of fish, an increase of 25% from 1999, and 1600% greater than 1950 figures. These numbers are considered unsustainable as they are slow to reach sexual maturity and are easily fished when in breeding aggregations. (Photo: Luiz Rocha)

Review: Nauticam NA-DP4 housing with SmallHD DP4 monitor

Wed, 09/05/2012 - 22:03

Wetpixel Editor Adam Hanlon reviews the Nauticam NA-DP4 housing with the SmallHD DP4 monitor. External monitors are a fantastic tool for those who shoot video on SLRs. The review that follows is not a comparative review, as Adam has only used the Nauticam/SmallHD version, but does provide his experiences with the unit, and some ideas that may be applicable to others. Given that each new camera seems to have improved video capabilities compared to its forebears, it is likely that external monitors will be as essential to underwater image makers as strobes are to still shooters now.

NASA posts Perpetual Oceans

Wed, 09/05/2012 - 15:54

NASA has published a stunning van Gogh "inspired" timelapse visualization of ocean surface currents around the world from June 2005 through December 2007 on YouTube. This visualization was produced using a computational model called Estimating the Circulation and Climate of the Ocean, Phase II (ECCO2). This attempts to model the oceans and sea ice to increasingly accurate resolutions that begin to allow modeling of ocean eddies and other narrow-current systems which transport heat and carbon in the oceans. Although it simulates ocean flows at all depths, this visualization shows only the surface currents.

Dpreview publishes in-depth review of Nikon D800

Wed, 09/05/2012 - 08:00

Dpreview.com has published an in-depth review of the Nikon D800. and D800e. The 29 page article discusses the features of the new camera, and compares them to both the preceding Nikon models and the new Canon 5D MkIII. It also features large numbers of test shots using the new cameras. Their conclusion shows that the folks at dpreview.com are very impressed with the new camera and they award it their "Gold Award". They do strike a cautionary note though:

".....if you're truly after 36MP performance, be prepared to do some work. Flawless technique, fast shutter speeds and top-shelf equipment (particularly lenses and a tripod) along with a low ISO are requirements not options."

Wetpixel has taken delivery of a D800 and the housing is awaiting customs clearance as we write. It should be "wet" in the next day or so, when we will start to put it through its underwater paces. The results will be posted both here and in the forums, so please keep checking back for updates.

Review: Atlantis MKI video lights

Tue, 08/05/2012 - 04:43

Renowned underwater photographer and videographer Norbert Wu gives his thoughts about the Atlantis MKI video light system. He notes that underwater filmmakers have longed for a lightweight, portable lighting solution that has a powerful, wide beam. He compares the lights to the Light and Motion SOLA 2000 lights and gives his thoughts on the use of video lights in shallow water and under bright conditions.

Wetpixel is also currently reviewing the Keldan LUNA 4V and Mangrove VC-4L6 video lights and will publish a comprehensive review soon.
