Wetpixel: Nauticam announces NA-5DMKIII housing

Nauticam has announced the imminent release of its housing for the new Canon 5D MkIII SLR. The NA-5DMKIII features a double paddle lever for the right thumb that activates AF-On and Record. The housing uses "piano key" controls for the Set and Quick Control functions, and a multi controller pad for the camera's joystick. Lastly, ISO, Live View/Movie and Focus point selector controls are all available from the right hand handle.

GoPro has recently announced the release of an underwater housing with a flat lens for its HERO POV cams. One of the issues that has been identified with this is that it is unable to take filters for color correction. Backscatter has announced that they have a product due for imminent release that will address this.

Paul Watson, founder of the environmental organization Sea Shepherd, was arrested at Frankfurt Airport, Germany on 12 May, pending extradition to Costa Rica. This was carried out due to a warrant that had been issued in Costa Rica relating to events in Guatemalan waters in 2002 when Watson's boat, the Farley Mowat, encountered an illegal shark-finning operation run by a Costa Rican ship, the Varadero.

Wetpixel: Illinois bans shark fin

stltoday.com reports that Bill HB4119 was passed today by the Illinois state legislature. This will make the possession or distribution of shark fins illegal in the state. State Sen. Antonio Munoz said the bill's purpose is to prevent shark finning, which is the removal of the shark's fin followed by releasing the shark back into the water.

A paper has been published in the Public Library of Science ONE (PLoS ONE) journal detailing the movements of Giant manta rays (Manta birostris). The research team from the Wildlife Conservation Society, the University of Exeter (UK), and the Government of Mexico attached satellite transmitters to manta rays off the coast of Mexico's Yucatan Peninsula over a 13-day period.
